Considering Working From Home? Here is What You Need to Know

Millions of people are now working from home as a means to earn some money on the side as well as for a full-time position. You may already be one of them, or you may have gotten sick of commuting to work on a strict schedule or are you looking for a way to make more money in your free time.

In order to get some money rolling in with a work-from-home job, you need to know the resources available to you and what to look for or avoid.

First of all, where do you find all of these jobs? Thankfully, with so many remote work options these days, all of the major job sites will have filters for both full and part time work as well as remote work. So an easy place to start is indeed.com, monster.com, or ziprecruiter.com.

How about if you don’t know which position you should be looking for? In that case there are a large variety of websites that cater specifically to work-from-home jobs, and can lead you down the path for the right fit without you starting from scratch. To this end check out Timecamp, We Work Remotely, FlexJobs, or Jobspresso.

So you know how to find the job, but what else will you need to work remotely? You of course will need a way to communicate with your coworkers. This not only includes phone calls and text, but also video chats and sharing materials. Most of the software is either free, or will be provided by the company, but for video chat make sure you have Google Chat, Skype, and Zoom set up on your computer. For messaging make sure you have Slack.

Now you have the resources at hand to get started, what else do you need to know? Probably most importantly will be your time commitment. Especially if you signed up for a full time job, you will most likely be working on your company’s schedule this means you need to make sure you know the time zone the company is based in and the hours you’re expected to be reachable online. You don’t want to miss a big meeting because the company is 2 time zones ahead of you and you missed the call while you were already on your computer.

Even if your company doesn’t have set hours, you need to make sure you set your own schedule. It may seem like you can work any time you want, but a big issue many work from home professionals site is the difficulty of time management.
